Another fic commentary request done. This time
hayaaateuh wanted me to do commentary on my Roy/Olivier That Girl WithThe Blue Dress On. Sooooooo sorry for the lateness, hayaaateuh! ;_;
As I mentioned a while back, this fic was written for
fma_fic_contest’s “Farce” prompt. Inspiration from
qashqai1’s art of Roy and Olivier being classy (here I’ll show the art again, haha). I then have people nagging me to write classy Roy/Olivier and this is the result. I REGRET NOTHING.
Title: That Girl With The Blue Dress On
Author: bay115
Series: Manga/Brotherhood
Word Count 1,803
Rating: PG-13
Characters Olivier/Roy, mentions of others
Summary: Olivier had no choice but to go to the military winter ball with Roy.
Warnings: Language, slight sexual implications
Lieutenant General Olivier Armstrong thought she was making a sham of herself allowing Brigadier General Roy Mustang to escort her to the annual winter military ball. Started the story with this line since I was writing it for the “Farce” prompt. Poor Olivier. :P
There was a reason behind this, she kept reminding herself. Fuhrer Grumman wanted all the high ranking officers to come to the dance this year and wouldn’t accept no for an answer. Not only that, he insisted she and Mustang go together. Olivier wanted to protest, but the wily old man hung up on her. With no other choice, she had called Mustang to ask him to be her date. One would think Grumman will try to have Roy go to the ball with Riza, but as later mentioned in the fic he found out the two aren’t seeing each other, so instead he hatches a plan for Roy and Olivier to go out.
“Wait… you want me to be your date for the ball?” There was a hit of shock in Mustang’s voice from the other line.
“As long as you don’t do anything stupid, the both of us will have a decent night.”
“Since when have I ever done anything stupid?”
“Just pick me up from the family mansion at seven. Don’t be late.”
When it was time for them to go to the dance, there was a huge crowd already inside Central Command’s ballroom. The chandeliers on top of the ceiling burned so brightly that the floor appeared to sparkle. Several tables were scattered around, each one with a rose inside a small vase. At the far end of the room there was a big band playing music. Olivier had to admit, the Fuhrer had outdone himself this year.
She and Mustang sat down and watched the people dancing while drinking water. So far Olivier recognized no one on the dance floor save for a few generals she rarely talked to. I see Olivier is moreso strict business with ranked officers outside of Briggs .
“Is this all we’re going to do all night?” Mustang asked, boredom showing in both his expression and his posture. He had his elbow on the table, chin resting against his fist. “Just stare at the people dancing?”
Olivier narrowed her eyes at him. “I have no interest in dancing with you. I’m just here because I have to be.”
An awkward silence fell between them, which Olivier was fine with since she really didn’t care to converse with the pathetic man.
“You actually look very lovely in that dress,” Mustang suddenly said. “Blue suits you very well.”
Olivier, who was taking another sip of her water, nearly choked. She was wearing a sleeveless blue dress, which she now thought was a very bad idea. The blue dress is all
qashqai1’s fault.
“And you’re imagining yourself taking it off me, huh?” she challenged.
“Perhaps.” A teasing smile played across Mustang’s lips.
Oliver huffed. “Figures. Keep dreaming.” BURN!
Another moment of silence, which Olivier took the opportunity to have a long look of Mustang. Like the other men, Mustang was dressed very formally in a suit and tie. This was the first time she saw him without his uniform and he actually looked not half bad. A slow song began playing. Soooo I believe Olivier hates Roy’s guts but at the same time thinks he’s a decent human being sometimes (she’s unwilling to say he’s sexy just yet LOL).
“Tell you what, just one dance with me. If you don’t like it, we don’t have to dance together ever again.”
Olivier had set her jaws shut, thinking over her choices. Dancing with him would make this night even worse. On the other hand, that would shut Mustang up and make a farce of himself. That does sound tempting.
“Alright… just one, but only because I want everyone to see you dance foolishly.”
Her comment didn’t faze Mustang at all; his face swept over with confidence. “I’ll prove them wrong.”
The both of them quickly stood up and walked to the dance floor. They halted, only for Mustang to take the female generals’ hand and kiss it; Olivier stared at him in shock. It didn’t embarrass him to do that in front of everyone in the ballroom? Nonetheless, they danced. Again, I BLAME
qashqai1!
Olivier thought Mustang might step on her feet, but he seemed to be careful about that. His movements were slow but graceful, like the classical music the band was playing. Perhaps he knew this song very well and danced to it thousands of times. She looked away from Mustang, but then snatched a short glimpse of him and immediately wanted to wipe that smile off his face.
As Olivier kept waltzing with Mustang, something caught her interest. A grin pulled on her lips.
“Oh, I see the Fuhrer somehow convinced your most loyal subordinate to be his date for tonight.” The general nodded over to Captain Hawkeye and Fuhrer Grumman waltzing together.
Mustang looked at Olivier with a blank expression. “What?” His face then relaxed to one of amusement when his eyes turned to the same direction. “Oh, I’m sure that’s not the case.”
Unsure whether to believe Mustang or not, Olivier raised an eyebrow. “How do you know?”
“The captain is Fuhrer Grumman’s granddaughter. Last month Hawkeye had a meeting with him and she told me about it. I think it’s great she’s able to find a living relative after many years of not knowing one.” There has been discussions over if Riza found out she’s Grumman’s granddaughter and if so, when. Some have it her knowing before joining Roy’s team, some after the Promised Day. The latter I’m actually going to have happen later in my FMA Big Bang Chasing the Desert (sorry for this being a slight spoiler D: ). But yeah, me personally I’m totally cool wherever in the timeline people have Riza find out about her familial relationship with Grumman.
This was the first time Olivier had heard about this, so she was a bit shocked. It was more surprising to hear from Mustang that Captain Hawkeye never knew a living relative of hers. She respected the woman very much, so she too was glad of that.
“I see. Who is Hawkeye with for this ball, then?”
“Fuery, actually, but they’re only going as friends. I was originally going to go with one of my ‘sisters’, but Grumman insisted I should have fun instead of work.”
Olivier couldn’t help but snicker. The lieutenant general knew about Mustang’s intelligence network, having a family friend rely information to him for several months before the Promised Day. That was one thing he was good at, though she hated to admit it. If he hadn’t suggested her Briggs men hide at her mansion, that fateful day would have ended differently.
“What about the others on your team?” Olivier asked, changing the subject.
“Well, there’s Breda and Ross, but they’re here as friends. Havoc’s with Catalina; they’ve been together for a while.”
From the corner of her eye Oliver saw Havoc and Catalina dancing, enjoying themselves. The newly promoted first lieutenant had returned back to work under Mustang’s command after going through a few weeks of therapy. The Philosopher’s Stone seemed to do Havoc good, his legs able to move properly. She had a great deal of respect for Havoc too, so good for him.
“They make a nice couple,” Olivier said with a small smile. She didn’t care for which military soldiers were seeing each other, but Havoc and Catalina looked so happy together that it peaked her interest. Another thought then came to her. “What about you and Hawkeye, then? I always thought you two… you know.”
“Wait, are you assuming the captain and I are in a relationship?” The flabbergasted look on Mustang’s face was priceless. “She’s a wonderful lady and I care for her a lot, but us together romantically just won’t work after all we’ve been though. The Promised Day brought us closer as friends, though.” As everyone knows, I’m such a sucker for Roy/Riza and I actually think the two having a relationship will work as supporting one another is what they need (as my first beta and I talked about when discussing Chasing the Desert -- CHAPTER FIVE, MAN). For the purpose of this story, though, they think romance between them won’t work. And yes, this is a totally different verse from Chasing the Desert.
Olivier was aware of the two’s history together. Her face didn’t show it, but she was pleasantly surprised Mustang and Hawkeye were nothing more than friends.
“So that’s how it is,” she said, and left it at that.
They continued dancing in silence until the music stopped. Everyone on the dance floor paused and applauded, including Olivier and Mustang. When the band played a much faster jazz beat, the both of them went back to their table and sat down.
“You’re actually not a bad dancer,” she said casually.
“I told you so. I’ve been to a lot of dances.”
“Oh, so I take it you don’t only dance with your ‘sisters’?”
Mustang scowled. “There were actually a few real dates I took out dancing.” Before he continued, his face broke to a beam. “Either way, though, thanks for the compliment.” Okay my headcanon is around 85-90% of Roy’s dates are from Chris’s girls, but pre-canon storyline he does have a couple serious relationships that went on for a while but stopped for different reasons.
“Well, don’t get your hopes up. I don’t think you’re good enough to dance though quick music.”
When the brigadier general burst into laughter, Olivier looked at him as if he were from another planet. “I prefer slow music, so I’m not offended.” He paused to calm himself. “We can dance again when the band plays another classical piece.”
Olivier wasn’t sure why, but she actually looked forward to another dance with Mustang. A tiny smile appeared on her lips. “Sure.”
+++
The rest of the evening went better than Olivier expected. She and Mustang danced with several different military officers and then they waltzed together when a couple slow songs played. After the military ball was over, Roy dropped Olivier off at her family’s mansion.
“I really had a nice time with you, General Armstrong,” Mustang said after he turned off the car engine. He cast Olivier a grin.
“Have to say, I enjoyed our evening too… somewhat.”
Mustang looked hurt. “Somewhat? Come on, admit it… you loved it.” Roy just LOVES pushing too far with Olivier.
“You still have a long way to go until I fully enjoy your company, Mustang,” Olivier’s face stretched to a smug expression.
“How did I know you would say that?” Mustang sighed, but later smiled. “Well, good night.”
Without warning, Mustang, one of his hands still on the steering wheel, gave Olivier a soft kiss… on the lips, which surprised her. At the back of her mind, she wondered if he did that just out of impulse. Even worse, she actually… liked it? When their lips parted, Olivier’s cheeks flushed.
“Something to remember me by before you go back to Briggs,” Mustang said, grinning. That’s not stepping on thin ice, Roy. That’s crashing into the icy pond! D:
What Mustang told Olivier hadn’t gone through her head as she was still slightly dazed over that kiss. A part of her wanted more of that, which was preposterous; she didn’t care. Apparently information gathering and dancing weren’t the only things he was good at. You’re only just finding this out now, Olivier? XD
“Kiss me again.” She flashed him a seductive smile and it was Mustang’s turn to look surprised.
“Wait, what?”
Before the useless alchemist could say anything else, Oliver pressed her lips against his and pinned him on the car seat. She felt Mustang’s hands on her hips without hesitation while they kissed, which got more intense. They paused for a moment to catch their breath. They smirked at one another.
“See, I knew you’d enjoy yourself tonight.”
Olivier snorted. “I might love it more if you shut the hell up.” She stole another kiss from him, this one much shorter but just as heated.
“Maybe it’d be best if we take it inside?” Mustang suggested, quirking a suggestive eyebrow.
“Alex and the rest of the family are most likely sleeping now. It’s best we do it here.” She began losing Mustang’s tie. “And maybe I’ll let you take off my dress.”
“Sounds like a plan.”
Olivier felt her blood rush when their lips pressed together for the fourth time tonight. As long as Mustang behaved and no one caught them having sex in the car, this would be a passable night for her. CAR SEX CAR SEX CAR SEX. LOL I actually have a couple people requesting a sequel to this story, but haha I don’t think I can do a car sex scene well despite having done three Roy/Riza smut stories so far this year. Sorry! D:
And that’s all for the commentary! I hope those that read it enjoy it very much. Thanks to
hayaaateuh for requesting commentary for this fic! If you guys want me to do commentary on another story (because I like talking about my fics LOL), I’m totally cool with that!
