Challenge #15

In your own space, Talk about Your Snowflake Experience. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

My Snowflake Experience has been enjoyable for the most part! It's been some years since I last partake in it, but I'm glad I did it this year. What I like about the Snowflake Challenge is meeting some new people and reflect on your fandom experience. In another post I mentioned some of my fandom experiences as of recent hasn't been spectular, but this challenge is one of the few fandom events that's been very nice and chill for me.

I admit I didn't get a chance to check out a lot of other Snowflake Challenge entries like I wanted due to busy with writing and other stuff, but I enjoyed interacting with the handful of people I managed to get in contact through this! Hopefully next time I'll make room for that.

Thanks to those that have dropped by during this challenge! Looking forward to next year's if this happens again!

Challenge #14

In your own space, remix an existing work into a new media, and/or rec three or more remixes that do the same. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Okay so I actually have a couple remix recs I have that are based off my fanfics!

The first remix rec is for my fic Foul Play. A reader by the name of justanotherartistgirl did two fanarts based off my fic! One is a scene from Chapter 5 where a Murkrow stole Grimsley's ring while another one is based off Chapter 8 where a Charjabug chewed on Grimsley's scraf. They're both fun art that I love.

The next remix rec is for my 2017 fic Dancing With Butterflies and Dragons. It's a Ace Attorney: Spirit of Justice fic where Amara gets rescued by Dhurke and the two started to fall in love again. Suzume did a cute fanart of the couple loosely based off my fic and oh my gosh just look at them.

An honorable mention: Just last week someone commented on an old FMA fic of mine asking if they would like to do a podcast on it and I said sure! I'm very looking forward to that.

In your own space, tell us about 3 fandom resources you use or enjoy. (One or two is fine, especially if you're in a smaller fandom!) Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

For Pokemon I tend to go Serebii to check out Pokemon moves and Bulbapedia for stuff on everything else like cities and characters.

For FE3H the fedatamine site is a goldmine as it has almost everything from dialog, a character's likes and dislikes, book entries, and more. FE3H's tropes page is great to revisit a character's personality and how they're shaped, but very spoilery lol.

Actually, for many of my fandoms I use TV Tropes quite a bit. Probably not a good idea though as you'll then get distracted reading the other TV Trope entries lol.

For general use Behind the Name whenever I'm stuck coming up with first and surnames.

In your own space, resurrect an old meme. Have fun with it! Which is the goofiest meme you can think of? Put on your party hat and be silly!! Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

So I went and did the Which Fantasy/Sci-Fi Character are you quiz and oh my gosh I got Gabrielle from Xena! This is great as back last fall I binged watch Xena: Warrior Princess through SyFy's website and I love her.

Which Fantasy/SciFi Character Are You?

Gabrielle
Passionate and pure of heart, you are a faithful companion in times of need.

That's what friends do, they stand by each other when there's trouble.

Gabrielle is the partner of Xena: Warrior Princess. The Legendary Journeys wiki includes her biography.

Challenge #11

In your own space, create a fanwork. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

So I actually have a draft of a FE3H fanfic done before this challenge was posted, but I waited until my beta was finishing looking over it to post it. Yes I'm still counting it for this challenge. And oh my gosh first time posting fanfic over at DW/LJ in such a long time!

Challenge #10

In your own space, write a love letter to Fandom in general, to a particular fandom, to a trope, a relationship, a character, creator, episode, or it could be your fandom friends. Share your love and squee as loud as you want to. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I admit I've been feeling eh over certain aspects of fandom. At certain points, I thought I belonged to a group, only for some people to ignore me and favor someone else. Besides that, there would be harassment and gatekeeping going around ("why ship x when you can ship y" for instance). However, I learn that it's better to have fun with a few close friends than to try to fit in.

So, a short love letter to my friends that I bonded over various fandoms and that I still talk to even when we go on to have different interests. Sometimes we might share new interests, which is nice.

Also special shoutout to my friends from the Pokemon fandom that I've been friends with the longest. Many of them also support my niche story and ship, which I was convinced that no one but me is interested in. Some of them also convinced me that maybe I should seriously think about attempting original writing.

The FE3H fandom deserves an honorable mention, too. While it does have its bad side (the harassment and gatekeeping mentioned earlier), there's also the good side. The Felix/Annette community in particular have been very sweet and supportive of one another. Also, the VAs from that game are cool and love to interact with the fans. It's also the series that I enjoy writing at the moment and still have many ideas for.

And I think that's it! Here's hoping 2021 I have a better fandom experience!

With love and fandom,
Bay

Challenge #9

In your own space, brag about yourself. Tell us what things you've done that you're proud of; the things that make you the wonderful person you are. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

For this challenge I'll mention the creative accomplishments I've done the past year.

On Tumblr I tend to do a yearly writing summary. For 2020 I've posted several chapters of my Pokemon WIP Foul Play and short FE3H fics. With Foul Play it's an arc that I had sitting on my drive for half a year before posting it and got a good couple feedback on that. I think for FE3H the ones I've been particularly fond of are The Lone Wolf and the Reclusive Bear, Head Over Heels For You, and Overnight Stay.

Besides that, I got into a couple FE3H fanzines! One is Solaris: A Balthus Zine and I'm a writer for that one. Another one is Sanguine Songbird : An Annette Fanzine and I'm a social mod there. I've been enjoying participating in both, so I would like try to get into a couple more fanzines if possible!

Challenge #8
In your own space, create a wishlist. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Artwork/feedback of my fanfics
So, there are a few of my FE3H fics that I would like to have more feedback on! Making artwork for them is also a bonus but if you can't that's cool. If you stumble upon this and aren't in the FE3H fandom but know someone that does, spread the word!

1. The Lone Wolf and Reclusive Bear: Felix/Bernadetta. Felix goes turncoat and fights for the Empire. During that he starts to have feelings for Bernadetta.

2. Head Over Heels For You: Felix/Annette. Annette tries to grab Felix's attention by flirting with him and wearing fancy undergarments. NSFW

3. To Carry A Burden: Dedue/Mercedes. Dedue wakes up from a nightmare and Mercedes comforts him.

Fanart/Fanfic/ DW Icons
So with me semi-returning DW and having new interests, I would like some icons! For specific characters/ships:

FE3H: Dimitri/F!Byleth, Felix/Annette, Felix/Bernadetta, Dedue/Mercedes, Balthus, any Blue Lions
Pokemon: Nanu, Grimsley, Kabu, Piers, Cynthia, Kukui, Swampert, Absol, Primarina. Nanu/Grimsley, Nanu/Kabu, Kukui/Burnet
Ace Attorney: Mia, Simon Blackquill, Nahyuta, Rayfa, Dhurke, Amara. Simon/Nahyuta, Dhurke/Amara
The Untamed: Wen Yuan (aka Lan Sizhui), Lan Xichen. TV Tropes of the Lan Clan.

If you're feeling generous, fanart or fanfic of those characters/ships listed are also cool but I would be just as happy with icons!

Communities to join
Sooo I want to talk to more Dimileth (Dimitri/Byleth) fans outside of Twitter. Usually Discord has servers for the big FE3H ships, so if anyone knows any Dimileth Discord servers um hit me up? lol

Challenge #7

In your own space, create your own challenge. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

So something I see a lot on Twitter is promoting artists of color. You would get hashtags like #HispanicArtists, #AsianAritsts, #MuslimArtists, etc. I thought hey maybe this might be cool for this challenge.

So for my challenge, promote a creator of color if you know some. It can be a fan creator of color or a professional one. It doesn't have to be art or writing. It can be a reviewer, Youtuber, cosplayer, etc. Don't know how successful this will go, but yeah have at it!

EDIT: So someone in the comments, [personal profile] analise010, mentioned a great addition: if you don't know any creators of color then investigate which is that the case and then to expand your media consumption to include them!

Challenge #6

In your own space, rec at least three fanworks that you didn’t create. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Only three fanworks? Hm, there's so many I want to give shoutouts to, but for the three I'll be reccing it'll be one fanfic, one fanart, and one music.

For fanfic, you won't even notice I'm gone by curlsncollege. It's a FE3H fanfic that features the pairing of Felix and Annette with Annette worrying over Felix leaving her. A nice look into Annette's fear of abandonment due to her past.

For fanart, this Ace Attorney art by minastarfruit. So in the the Ace Attorney fandom there's this running joke every Christmas Eve that goes: "It's almost Christmas means that it's not Christmas." When the sixth game came out, a character named Rayfa has her birthday on Christmas Eve and her birthday gets overshadowed with the fandom joke. I was so happy that someone didn't forget her birthday.

For music, insaneintherain's Year of Sinnoh. Insaneintherain is a Youtuber that does jazz covers of various video game music. Last year he started a project called Year of Sinnoh where he covers music from the Pokemon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum games. If any of you are into the fourth gen games and love its music, defintely check Year of Sinnoh.

Challenge #5

In your own space, promote a canon/talk about a part of canon that you love. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

So I think I mentioned the DnD podcast/show Critical Role a couple times here. What I would like to promote though is another podcast in a similar vein called The Adventure Zone.

So The Adventure Zone is a podcast by the McElory brothers and their father where they play Dungeons and Dragons and other tabletop games. Their first one was the Balance arc and it was the usual high/urban fantasy plot that DnD often has with some modern takes. There was a murder train mystery, a Wild West timeloop arc, drag racing, and a gameshow to name a few. Also some characters are LBTQ! There are over 60 episodes and each one are great, especially the final episode.

They then did a few short ones before settling with the Amnesty arc, which was more like monster of the day fare. Like the Balance arc there are three main characters. One is a park ranger with a talking sword, one is a bisexual woman who has fire powers, and one who runs a shop similar to Gravity Falls's Mystery Shack. This one is about 20-30 something episodes, so shorter than the Balance arc and the pacing is a bit off at times but still fun.

Their current campaign they're doing now is Graduation, which is about three characters who are supposed to be in a school that teaches how to be heroes or villains, but instead they're put in a school for sidekicks. It's still ongoing but I think it has potential to be great at the end.

Um, I realize TAZ has more than one canon and the question asks to promote a canon oops. The McElroy family though are great with characters and why I'm still following their stories. I totally recommend checking out the Balance arc and then try out the other stories too if you're into tabletop games, good stories and characters, or both!

Challenge #4

In your own space, create some goals. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

I have two big goals. The first one is to finish my Pokemon WIP, Foul Play. This year will be the 4th year I've been working on it, so I hope to finally finish it. I have about 6 more chapters to go, so it should be dolable!

My other goal is to read more books. I recently signed up for a Reading Challenge and I have myself go for 10 books this year. I already finished one called Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas, which I totally recommend everyone to check it out.

Maybe another goal is to get accepted into another fanzine? At the moment I've been focusing on ones for the FE3H fandom. There's two I got accepted last year, one as a writer and another as mod. Right now I'm writing a quick story to use as a writing sample for one or two zine applications but I'm totally unsure about my prose at the moment lol.
bay_alexison: (Rainy day no thank you)
Oh my gosh so I meant to make a post for Snowflake Challenge Days 2 and 3 last night, but I got distracted with the Georgia Election results. AND THEN today happened and got even more distracted oops. Okay, gonna reply real quick!

Challenge #2

In your own space (or their own space) interact with someone new. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. No need to leave a link for this one, but if you’d like to invite others to join the conversation, please do leave one.

So I haven't checked out any new DW journals that are partaking this challenge (still need to get back in the swing of things DW wise). I did appreciated a few new folks that replied to my intro post a few days ago, though! But yeah, might try to check out a couple new journals at least something this month.

Challenge #3: Guess Who's Coming to Dinner

In your own space, tell us who, from one of your fandoms, would you most want to have dinner with (or tea, or a random afternoon visit), And why? This could be a creator, an actor, a costumer, a set designer, a director, a character, a composer, anybody! What would you talk about? What are you dying to know? Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Overall I would like to meet some voice actors from my favorite anime/games! Definitely Travis Willingham as he plays both as Roy from FMA and also is in Critical Role. I would also like to meet Chris Hackney, who plays as Dimitri from FE3H. I've never gone to a con before, so I never get to meet voice actors. And with the pandemic still goin on well...

Ironically, the character Dimitri I would like to have tea with in real life and not just the game hahaha.

So I've noticed that Snowflake Challenge is running again! I remember participating in it a few years ago and enjoyed it, so I thought about trying it out again!

Challenge #1

In your own space, introduce yourself! Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

For those checking this journal out the first time: Hi, I'm Bay! I'm 30+ years old living in California, USA. I used to do office administrative work, but then I wasn't assigned much work anymore and then the pandemic happened. Hopefully after that is over I'll be able to get back on my feet again.

Writing and reading are my big interests. For now I've been writing fanfiction but I hope to do original someday. I thought up an original premise last year that I would love to try my hand at (a modern day version of the classic Faust folklore). I also like playing video games even though I'm bad at them haha. After playing them, I tend to be inspired to write fanfic for them (you'll see with my AO3 account later). I also like listening to music! I tend to vibe with whatever, but rock tends to be my favorite.

In terms of fandom, I would jumped around every few years though there are some that I'm still very interested in. Currently the stuff I create are based off Pokemon and Fire Emblem: Three Houses. I'm also into the Chinese live action drama The Untamed (and plan to read the book that the drama was based off it someday), and Ace Attorney. While not creating for it anymore, I was into Fullmetal Alchemist and the Bravely series games and still am to some degree.

I'm mostly active on Tumblr and Twitter, though I'll still try to check up on DW once in a while! Links to those and my AO3 account and carrd info:

Tumblr: https://bayalexison.tumblr.com/
Twitter: https://twitter.com/bay115
AO3: https://archiveofourown.org/users/Bay
Carrd: bayalexison2.carrd.co (more updated info on my interests, links, and such)

Yeah, I think that's it! If there's anything you want to talk about or just say hi go ahead!
bay_alexison: (Default)
Last entry for Snowflake Challenge. This has been fun and been enjoying responding to the challenges!

Day 15: In your own space, create your own challenge. What’s something you want to see more people doing in fandom? Is there something fun you’ve tried that you think other people would enjoy if they gave it a go? Dare your friends to try it out, and have fun with it.

One challenge I thought of is to try out a new fanwork challenge/community you've never done before. It can be a new Big Bang challenge, a fic exchange hosted at AO3, or something that runs yearly like Porn Battle (next round starts next week!). Maybe there's a kink meme you haven't tried yet or you've never done a remix fic before. There should be several specific fandom ones through LJ and DW. I always enjoy different fanwork challenges, memes, and communities as I get inspiration for my works through those. I think this could be fun/interesting for everyone.
bay_alexison: (I got a secret)
Day 14: In your own space, write a love letter. Write it Fandom in general, to a particular fandom, to a trope, a relationship, a character, or to your flist. Share you love and squee as loud as you want to.

So yeah, this is a love letter to my f-list.

Love Letter ).
bay_alexison: (Rainy day no thank you)
Day 13: In your own space, talk about setting yourself a fannish goal. Big or small, it doesn't matter. Some great examples include: complete a bingo, sign-up for a Big Bang, write that fic you've been thinking about for years, podfic that story that you love, make a fanmix for your fandom, post that bit of meta or reclist you keep postponing. Maybe resolve to be better at leaving feedback, or answering comments.

A couple fannish goals )
bay_alexison: (SPROING)
Day 12: In your own space, talk about what you think the future holds for fandom. What are your hopes and dreams for fandom? Do you have any predictions about what the next five years holds for fandom?

Long general fandom thoughts )
bay_alexison: (Default)
Day 11: Stretch yourself a little and try something new. Go play in a new fandom or with a new pairing or trope. Try creating a different kind of fanwork. Or check out some types of fanworks that are new to you.

This is where I check out a Homestuck pairing for this challenge )
bay_alexison: (Coffee)
Day 9: In your own space, rec at least 3 fanworks you thought you wouldn't like (because they weren't your fandom or they pushed against your boundaries or you thought you just wouldn't be interested) but you ended up loving.

One FMA and two Homestuck recs )

Day 10: In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts.

Fannish wish list )
