Merry Christmas! (and a fanfic question)

Okay, last night while Christmas shopping, I was thinking about how there were many fics with main characters related to gym leaders/elites, many which are borderline Mary/Gary Sue. Here's a question: is there a way to not make a main character who is related to a gym leader/elite a Gary/Mary Sue? I want to make a one shot to demonstrate a right way to make a character in that situation, per say, but not sure if it could be done.
Oh, if you guys are wondering about the last post, probably not going to do it. I"m not going to take Psychic's dare. ^^;
